Dangers of Winter Weather for Children in Vehicles

Children safety is always a main concern. Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for young children who aren’t able to regulate their temperature as well. 

 When in the car, problems due to temperature are normally thought of in the terms of a heatstroke. However,  according to NHTSA “winter can be just as deadly for children left in an unattended vehicle. For an adult, being exposed to wind chills of -20°F will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. With children being more susceptible to injury from the cold, any amount of time left in an unattended vehicle may lead to disastrous consequences.”

Winter is also not easy to navigate when it comes to dressing your children for warmth but also to be able to fit in their harness.

“As a general rule, bulky clothing, including winter coats and snowsuits, should not be worn underneath the harness of a car seat.”
