New Years Eve Driving Safety
Going out with friends and family on New Years Eve is such a fun time. Many people have a drink or two while waiting for the ball to drop and the new year to begin. Before you celebrate, think about how you’re going to get home safely.
New Years Eve is one of the nights with the highest drinking and driving rate. According to Auto Safety, “Compared to the average weekend night, the 12-hour window between 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 6 a.m. on Jan. 1 tends to have about 71% more crashes where alcohol or drugs are listed as a contributing factor.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “2,597 people lost their lives due to motor vehicle traffic crashes during December 2010.”
And surprisingly enough, New Years Eve is the most dangerous day of the year to walk. The journal Injury Prevention shared that, “more pedestrian deaths occur on New Year’s Day than any other day, including Halloween”
Hopefully these facts make people think twice about traveling while intoxicated on busy Holidays.
